Obituary of Douglas Farmer

Surrounded by his family, Douglas Farmer of Owen Sound, in his 76th year, peacefully passed away.  He had suffered a series of strokes, from which he could not recover.

Doug is survived by his wife Meran, his sons Scott (Sherry Doucette), and Justin (Crystal Stobbe).  He adored his three little grandchildren, Myles, Elyse and Austin.  He is also missed by his sisters Pat Hart (Mike), Joanne, and by his brother Bob (Brenda), and nephews and nieces. Doug was predeceased by his brother Norm.

Born and raised in Owen Sound, Doug owned and operated Gord Jennings Real Estate, The Appraisers Network and dabbled in other various business projects.  He is remembered as a joyous man with a wicked sense of humour.  He was well known as a terrific joke teller, and a writer of hilarious poems.  Doug lived his life on his terms.  He never stopped learning, taking courses well into his 60’s.  He was a dedicated member and past president of the local Rotary Club, and a member of the Silver C’s.  In retirement, he spent many years happily restoring classic wooden boats, and especially MGBs.  He especially enjoyed the company of many friends who shared his enthusiasm for the hobby.

At a very early age, Doug was passionate about the trumpet and piano and became an amazingly talented musician who loved Dixieland Jazz and played with the Empire Stove and Dixieland Band, the Stardust Big Band, Military Band, the Owen Sound City Band, and the Earl Georgas Band. Lately, he loved playing his piano for the Silver C’s Men’s Choir.  He was “the Piano Man”, an entertainer at heart.  Doug was a loving father, husband, brother and friend.  We will forever love and miss Doug and his wonderful music.

Cremation is taking place and memorial visitation will be held at the Brian E. Wood Funeral Home on Sunday, October 24th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.  Guests must wear a mask and follow social distancing protocols.  A private memorial service to celebrate Doug’s life will follow and although the service is private, it will be livestreamed via the funeral home website at 3:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Owen Sound Regional Hospital Foundation or a charity of choice would be appreciated and can be made through the funeral home.  Condolences can be sent to Doug’s family by visiting his online memorial at
