Obituary of Dorothy "Dot" Rathwell

Dorothy passed away peacefully with her loving daughter by her side at Lee Manor in Owen Sound, on October 5, 2020.  Born in St. Vincent Township on November 30, 1934, Dorothy Minerva Rathwell (née Smith) of Owen Sound, was in her 86th year.


Loving mother of Cheryl Jackson and her husband Brad of Owen Sound.  Cherished Grandma of Sheena Jackson (Jonathan Holmes) of Tara and Craig Jackson of Barrie.  Adored Nana of Cayden and Kylie.  Dear sister of Lila McVittie (Mike) of Meaford, Lorraine Burrell of Meaford, David Smith (Gloria) of Meaford, Gary Smith (Darlene) of Meaford, Elva Chafe (Richard) of Michigan, and sister-in-law of Joyce Rourke (Harold) of Hanover, Betty McClure (Charlie) of Owen Sound and Muriel Kowal (Edward) of Caledon.  Dot will also be missed by her many nieces, nephews and friends.


Predeceased by her husband Bev Rathwell, son Brad Rathwell and his wife Carol, parents Aubrey and Edna Smith, brother Nelson Smith, and by her sister-in-law Marian Armstrong (Brian).


Dot enjoyed dancing, playing cards and spending time with family and friends.  She worked as a nurse at MacKinnon Phillips Hospital in Owen Sound from 1963 until her retirement in 2000.  Over the years, Dot and Bev enjoyed many trips to Florida. 


Cremation is taking place and a private service to celebrate Dot’s life will be held at the Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, Owen Sound, 519-376-7492, on Thursday, October 15, 2020.   Due to COVID19 restrictions, all attendees are required to wear a mask and must follow social distancing rules.  Friends are welcome to watch the service at 1:00 p.m. via livestream by selecting the ‘LIVE STREAMING’ menu option at the top right corner of the funeral home website homepage (  Interment will follow in Leith Cemetery.
