Obituary of Betty Moran
Beatrice “Betty” Moran (nee Hocking), of Owen Sound, passed suddenly but peacefully at her home on Saturday morning, October 5th, 2019, at the age of 88 years.
Born in South Porcupine, Ontario on August 17, 1931, Betty was the daughter of Bert Hocking and Beatrice Rutherford. Betty married Thomas Moran (2012) in 1952 and was a caring and devoted wife for 60 years as well as a warm-hearted and giving mother of five children. Dearly loved, Mom will be missed by her daughter Patricia (Kevin), and her four sons Arthur (Marni), Bill (Kerolyn), Tom, and John (Christine). Betty was a proud grandmother of Taylor, Matthew, Arthur Jr., Patrick, Jaclyn, Jillian, Hillary, Morgan and Spencer, great-grandmother of Kieran, Jack, Elizabeth, Jonathan Philip, Carmen, and William and step-great-grandmother of Theo. Predeceased by her brother, William Hocking (Kathleen), Betty is survived by two loving sisters, Barbara Aris (Roly) and Doreen Soni (Gino deceased).
Mom lived life to the fullest and was making lists and plans for the future right up until her last moments. Since 2005, she had been an avid traveller, cruising the world from Alaska to the Antarctic. She loved to cruise, particularly during the coldest weeks and months of winter in Owen Sound, and had already booked her trip for next February.
During the last ten years, when two of her children made homes for themselves up on Manitoulin Island, Mom made the island her summer destination place. Each spring she pulled out the calendar, marking the weekends she wanted to spend on the island and booking reservations on the Chi-Cheemaun well in advance to ensure she had a spot for her car on the ferry. She looked forward to spending a couple of weeks every year on the island. In fact, the day of her funeral – October 10th – she had a reservation on the ferry. She was heading up to join many members of our family to attend the wedding of her youngest son, Arthur, and to celebrate Thanksgiving. She loved Manitoulin Island and was there a couple of weeks ago at the end of the summer, baking wild blueberry pies and making plans to come up for Christmas.
When she wasn’t travelling, Mom maintained a busy social life in Owen Sound. She treasured her regular outings with friends for coffee and enjoyed attending local theatre and being active in the community. She was a long-time member of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada, The Owen Sound Historical Society and St. Mary’s Church.
Mom was kind, generous and humble. Caring and giving were the cornerstones of her strong character and she often conveyed her love through baking and food. Mom always had goodies at the house ready for when people dropped by, and when she would visit our homes, she arrived with her car filled with many boxes of food staples as well as her delicious homemade pies, cookies and other baked goods all wrapped and ready to go in the freezer.
She entered the working world late in life, once her children were older, and worked for 20+ years at Tim Hortons in Owen Sound. She met and made an impact on many people throughout her career and could anticipate and recite the orders of her regular customers long after her promotion to store manager. Mom always kept busy and had a strong work ethic. She was independent and rarely asked for help. Mom still insisted on being the one to mow her lawn and remove the snow from her driveway. Last week, she was digging up flowerbeds to ensure they would be in shape for the next growing season. When Mom finally did sit down to relax at the end of each day, she enjoyed reading, listening to music and having a piece of her favourite chocolate from Manitoulin Island.
Mom moved on from this world without fanfare and that is just the way she would have wanted it. She will be always in our thoughts and forever in our hearts.
