Obituary of Ruth Hamill
With deep sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Dorothea Ruth Hamill (nee Shier) on April 25th, 2019, one day prior to her 103rd birthday. With family support, she was able to remain at her Massie home until moving to Grey Gables 16 months ago. Ruth was predeceased by her loving husband, Carman in 2005. Dear mother of Doreen, of Mississauga, Jim (late Linda), of Meaford, Stewart (Mary-Lou), of Merrickville, Bruce, of Ottawa, Ted (Mary Louise), of Jackson and Mary Jean, of London. Fondly remembered by 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by 2 brothers and 5 sisters as well as Carman’s 5 sisters and 2 brothers. Ruth was the daughter of Wilfred and Margaret (Taylor) Shier and was raised on the family farm which is now the site of Wiarton Airport. She taught in one-room schools at Zion-Keppel and Hoath Head. After her marriage, she became Carman’s right-hand gal on their farm. Ruth devoted time to local and county organizations, notably UCW, WI, 4H Clubs, Federation of Agriculture and the Historical Society. She was awarded a Canada 125 medal for volunteer service and received the Tommy Cooper Award in 2006. Ruth’s baking, gardening and handicraft skills were known beyond her home and delighted the grandchildren. We cherish the gift of our Mother’s long and productive life. Her love and dedication to family will always be remembered. Cremation has taken place.
