Obituary of Gerrit VanderPloeg
John 14:1-4 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”
Steadfast in his love for God, Gerrit VanderPloeg died peacefully at Maple View Long Term Care on Sunday September 10th 2017. He was married to Elisabeth (2006) for 55 years. Gerrit was the father of Phyllis and Dave Lovell, Alma and Durk Devries, Willard and Ingrid VanderPloeg and Elaine VanderPloeg. He was predeased by Elisabeth, his son Stan, his grandson Fernand and his great grand-daughter Hannah. Gerrit was a brother to Johanna, Cornelius, John, Ray, Dick, and Ralph. Gerrit was a much loved grandfather to Derek, Joe, Erin, Lindsey, Fernand, Josie, Matthew, Maria, Gerrit, Kelly, Scott, Chris, Nicholas, Bethany and Taylor. Gerrit was a great grandfather to Ashlee, Joshua, Ryan, Kurtis, Jackson, Anna, Jamie, Malia, Beau, Quinn, Claire, Ezra, Lucy, Grace, Ophelia, Peter and Jesse. Gerrit was strong in his faith and a leader in his church, a proud Canadian by choice, a business man, a mason, an employer, a devoted community builder and a champion of the poor. He travelled to regions around the world, hit by natural disasters to rebuild safe housing for the most vulnerable members of the community.
He would be honored if you remembered his life with a donation to World Renew (Disaster Response Service), the Owen Sound Regional Hospital Foundation or a charity that assists poor and the vulnerable. Visitation for Gerrit VanderPloeg will be held on Wednesday 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 pm at the First Christian Reformed Church, 201-4th Ave. W., Owen Sound. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Christian Reformed Church, on Thursday, September 14th at 11:00 am with Pastor Harry Zantingh officiating.
