Obituary of Verdun Fisk

WWII VETERAN

Verdun Wellstood Fisk passed away peacefully after a brief stay at the Grey Bruce Health Services in Owen Sound, on Thursday, May 3rd, 2012 in his 96th year. Beloved husband of the late Olive (nee Ellard); much loved father of John Fisk and his wife, Susan Doble, of Halifax, NS; cherished grandfather of Jordan and Ryan Fisk; devoted partner of Alma Wilson, of Owen Sound. Dear brother of the late Edith Nicholl, Muriel Penton and Charles, Bruce, Kenneth, Gerald, John, and Maxwell Fisk. Verdun was born in Fenelon Falls, Ontario, son of the late John Albert Fisk and Clara Ellen Wellstood. Verdun served with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, 5th Armoured Division between 1942 and 1946 where he was affectionately known as Vic. After the war, he married his sweetheart, Olive. He then obtained his Bachelor of Science of Forestry from the University of Toronto, Class of 1952 and worked for the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests/Ministry of Natural Resources, beginning in 1953. Short periods of time were spent in Lindsay, Sioux Lookout and St. Williams but it was Owen Sound that the Fisk family called home and where Verdun served as the Owen Sound District Supervisor until his retirement in 1981. He was a lifetime member of the Ontario Professional Foresters Association. Verdun was a member of the local Legion, curling and lawn bowling clubs. He devoted many volunteer hours in support of the community as a member of the Silver C’s. A man of few words, his values and his commitment to his family, friends and community were made evident through his actions. Our appreciation is sent to the wonderful staff of University Hospital, London and of the Grey Bruce Health Services for the care and respect that they provided during the last two weeks of Verdun’s life. Special thanks is also extended to his partner, Alma and her family, to friends, including Bud and Phyllis Jolley, to the Silver C’s and everyone in the Owen Sound community who enabled Verdun to live the rich and independent life he aspired to live until the end.

A Memorial Service for Verdun Fisk will be held at the BRIAN E. WOOD FUNERAL HOME, 250 – 14th Street West, Owen Sound, Ontario N4K – 3X8 (519-376-7492) on Saturday, June 9th, 2012.
